A new record?

Back in our Idaho days, there was a burrito shop we’d frequent somewhat regularly. Or, frequently, I guess it would be. [We were regulars.] Certainly on those “don’t feel like cooking” days at home, but definitely after a big bike ride, or after picking one of the kids up from the airport, or … whenever! The longest burrito detour I recall was from Wallace, ID* over to Spokane, WA, which, as Google Maps reminds me, is a distance of ~80 miles, or ~100 if you include the return to Post Falls.

Today, after enjoying a week in the eastern Sierras, I got a wild idea to drive back down to Lone Pine and grab food from the Alabama Hills Cafe & Bakery. The only real hitch being that it’s 125 miles one way from my perch in Lee Vining. That’s about five gallons of gas, about two hours drive time, and about $35 for the meal (including tip).

And so, was it worth it?

Veg stir fry, fresh fruit, home fries, hot coffee…. Ahhhhhh…. I’d have to give it a resounding, “Yes!” Not only are the mountains awe-inspiring this time of year, but there are cool small towns and historic sites and countless side roads to explore. And, as an added bonus, fresh-baked bread, everything bagels, and super garlicky hummus at Great Basin Bakery in Bishop on the way back. Plus, also in Bishop, they have real grocery stores and good coffee and a pretty neat city park tucked in right off the main drag.

So, full disclosure: Yes, I am ready, willing, and able to leave an epic camping spot and go in search of good food. And, ladies and gentlemen, I do believe 250 miles sets a new record for just how far I’ll go for that perfect meal. Did it once. Will most likely do it again.

*Wallace claims to be the center of the universe, so the actual mileage will depend upon which multiverse you’re in.
