Someone said that to me the other day. I wasn’t sure how to respond! And so, like anyone in search of answers, I turned to the interwebs to provide an answer for me. And, of course, as my good friends Taliesen & Evitel might say: It was a shit show, obviously.
There was the usual discussion of how homeless is out of fashion now that many people choose to not own a home and that home ownership is no longer possible for many others. There were the usual suggestions for alternative (i.e. “PC”) phrases we might use, such as unhoused, or unsheltered, or <insert-your-term-du-jour-here>.

But then, there were some articles and posts which were outwardly hostile to van lifers. We are glorifying homelessness! We are not contributing to society! We are not holding down traditional jobs (which is the backbone of ‘Merica, gol’Dernit)! We are not paying taxes! We are not part of a community!
The outrage is strong with that one. I don’t even know how to start a counter-argument to thinking like that. My usual approach — to kill ’em with kindness, or give them an Isn’t that precious? look and move on — was not going to work against stupidity like that. You can formulate your own responses as your homework assignment for the day.
In the mean time, I will continue sleeping under spectacular star shows, waking up to billion dollar views, working and exercising in the mountains and forests and lakes, and seeking out new and interesting locations and peoples. Oh, and good food … lots of good food, please!
See you on the road!
