Xmas in SC

I had a chance to stop in SC to visit mom/g-ma. Well, actually, full disclosure I had stopped in SC to visit and was already back out of town when my brother texted saying he just called 9-1-1 and she was going to the hospital for a stroke.

And so, I duly turned my trusty Subes around and headed once again to SC to check on her. The hospital wouldn’t let anyone in, and as it turns out she was already being discharged by the time I got there, and so the all-hands-on-deck response for a stroke had quickly evolved into a prescription for antibiotics for a UTI*. But, I got to visit again and we worked on a puzzle and all was well.

The bonus of the trip being that I was in SC on Xmas day and most of the town was SHUT. [In actuality, a lot of more progressive places are also closed on Xmas Eve now, too, which is good for the employees but was a nuisance since SCCRCo was closed and I was forced to go to Starbucks**.] After some coffee and some sittin’ around, I drove downtown and there were a few people milling about but nothing much appeared to be going on. Which was nice! Peace and quiet. It is the cure for all your ills.

And the cure for your hunger turns out to be a new stir-fry place called Gobi Mongolian in the old Marini’s storefront. Open on holidays and on holy days!

It’s a make-your-own-adventure setup, where you choose the items and quantity that go into your bowls and they have a chef standing there ready to blast it all on his [yes, it’s always a dude] flat top. Most of the people there were laden with noodles and meats and came away with bland and boring looking plates, but mine was a delight.*** And, so filling. Well worth the $17****. If you’ve learned nothing from this blog, remember the mantra: every color of the rainbow.

And also remember, it’s the sauce that saves the day.***** The best recipe being (so far): three ladles of soy sauce, one large ladle of garlic, one heaping glop of chili sauce, and a drizzle of chili oil. Your eyes will be watering and your nose draining throughout your meal, but your gut microbiome will be pleasantly pleased and your life will eventually contain as many exclamation marks as mine (!).

And now, belly full, it’s back to the mountains for me.

Winter is coming.

*Probably preventable, but that’s a story for a differ day.

**Except I bumped into my new friend Kate from The Bagelry (Hi, Kate!) and it’s always a good day when you get a beaming smile from her. [Everyone deserves at least one Kate in their life. She’s smiling, and then you’re smiling, and then someone sees you and they’re smiling, and pretty soon there is world peace. That’s how it works.]

***Don’t mind that pink and white box behind my plate — it most certainly does not contain donuts from the new vegan donut shoppe across the street (in the old Starbucks). Nothing to see here. Move along.

****But the random cashier guy sometimes charges dinner prices at lunch time for some reason, so today it was $19+tip.

*****Or, quite possibly, spoils the day. Some of the combinations people use are just wackadoodle.
