Back to the Sierras

Well, folks, you have to know the truth: I’m addicted to the mountains. And so, after a quick visit to SC to pick up mail and visit mom/G-ma, I did a full drive day a few hours ahead of an epic storm rolling through the mountains. And, in fact, it felt like I was in the eye of the tornado most of the day, over Highway 88 just as the blizzard was beginning and the closures were starting. Then, onto Highway 395, where for long stretches it was fine but then there’s a grade up to 7000+’ and the snow and ice returned.

But, the Subes4Life handled it all without any drama or perturbation. I had white knuckles and a racing heart a few times, but the car kept on truckin’. [Or, carrin’, as it were.]

Long story short, I made it to my destination and hunkered down for the high winds and multiple feet of snow which had been forecast(ed). As I used my noggin this time and tucked the Subes4Life behind a windblock, the buffeting was mild. Though, I could see the kway snow bursts blowing by on all sides.

It was: fun.

And, it was: cold.

Woke up in the morning and I showed 12F, which explains why I kept waking up with a cold nose all night. LMAO. Everything perfect except the schnozz. I can now officially sympathize with the Princess who struggled in a similar manner (but with a sore back).

Sunrise in the eastern Sierras.

The multiple feet of snow thing turned out to be fake news, at least at my elevation (~6500′), but 88 and 395 still have closed sections and chain control sections and I missed all that by a hair.

There are some drawbacks about camping in the snow, but the pros outweigh the cons. For me, at least. And, storm gone, I had a full day of sunshine to keep my electrics running and my soul bursting.

Still dealing with some stove drama, but I got coffee made and the Joe’s-Os munched and crunched. I’d have to say that life is good. Add some wine and chocolate, and I can honestly say I’m being a better me.

Tomorrow the weather-guessers say it should hit about 40F high, and then almost 50F the next day. Note to self: where did I stash my shorts and sunscreen?

Life in the Sierras.

It doesn’t get much better than this.
