Big storm do

Wowza, dodged another stormageddon this week. Cali is getting hit with “bomb cyclones” and “atmospheric rivers” lately, and this winter has been no exception. I spent a few hours watching the wind patterns one day, and decided to make a run for it. Partly because the truck stop clerk said she was worried they’d close 395 again (last time was for three days … ugh*), but also so I could time it just right to get a tail wind part way back to SC**.

Stopped in Tehachapi to watch the rainbows and grab some Panda Express, but I was left disappointed by my future forecast:

Reminds me of the cryptic “Yer Fortune Be” soothsayer favors my son Kai used to sell. I don’t remember all the fortunetelling that went on there, but I do remember the occasional feeling of $1 per fortune being a bit pricey***.

Anyway, no matter. It was a long driving day, and it turns out I made the right call. Snow closures all along 395, closures and restrictions over the passes at Hwy 58, many feets of snow delivered overnight, big accidents, etc., etc.

But, was it luck? Good fortune? Intuition? Hard-earned outdoor knowledge/wisdom? Or me being a big coward and not wanting to risk it? [Maybe all of the above?]

In a way, we all make our own luck.

And, also, how one spins the outcome turns it into a good or bad event.

I like to think it’s skill.

But, Panda thinks YOU [I] WILL STEP ON THE SOIL of something**** or other, so mebbe it was all foretold by the Fates and the Gods.

No snow for me. Not this time.

Skill or fate?

Maybe we will never know.

*She was lamenting the fact that they weren’t able to get to work during the road closures.

**One time ago, I got the Subes4Life up to almost 30mpg by cruising the southwardsly winds down and around towards Bakersfield. This time, it was OK but I only got about 26mpg.

***But, at least he didn’t pursue his career in potion alchemy, ’cause some of those were outright horrid. Free, but free barber* comes with every serving.

*IYKYK. And yes, this is a footnote to a footnote. It’s a thing.

****What else could it be? I puzzled on this one for way longer than it deserves.
