I mentioned to my son Cameron that I’ve been back in the World of Warcraft lately, playing on a “hardcore” server just for kicks. The hardcore thing is new, a spin-off from the Ironman concept, really, but with a duel-to-the-death option included. A lot of the Ironman restrictions are not there, but the permanent death thing is enforced.
It’s classic WoW, though, so there are super tough mobs and fast respawns, finding good gear is impossible, it’s grindy as hayall*, and it’s fun beyond belief. All my toons so far are named Beeyo**, and I’ve made every mistake one can make on hardcore — death from fall, death from too large a pull, death from not paying attention to health bar and just dying, death from unseen caster blasting away from behind a tree, death from mistakenly pulling an elite, death from the inevitable Beeyo mob™, etc. ad nauseum.
My current Beeyo is doing fine1, and I just equipped him with a pwn wand and full bags and herb/alch skills and usually all of that would be the curse of death*** but this time I’m being very careful and going slowly.
Lessons learned.
Back in the real world, I came across this the other day:
My first thought was, “Oh! Peacebloom!” And, I stopped and turned to pick it.
My second thought was, “Oh, I’m not in game right now.”
My third thought was, “Playing too much WoW lately, Deeds?”
Got a good chuckle from that one, yes sirree. And luckily there was no one around on the Wilder Ranch (RL) server to see my folly. The “herb node” remained unpicked, and I gained zero XP.
But, it was a cool meta (?) moment**** and a mighty fyne hike in (Ah!) the great outdoors.

*Grindy, as in killing boars in Westfall for hours so that one can get all the ingredients for Mrs. Saldean’s special recipes.
**Not a porkis, after all. And yes, all the toons … plural. I’m on number six or seven now, mostly holy priests but with a hunter and warlock thrown in just for variety and to confirm that I still prefer holy priests.
***Never fails, accumulate too much gold or buy something fancy or equip with AH greens or large bags or whatever, and that toon dies soon after. Death is perma, so all your stuff is gone when you are ….
****Almost as cool as when comes across a chest in-game. Nothing beats the thrill of opening an unclaimed chest. Yes, still a thrill, even though most of the time it’s junk like an apple or some linen or maybe some coppers. A chest! My chest! Miiiinnnnnneeeeeeee!
- Actually, full disclosure that Beeyo died a sad and unnecessary death by Trogg swarm in Loch Modan. Beeyo #5 or #6 (I’ve lost count) is back in action, and is doing quite well thank-you-very-much after one near-death in Westfall due to me putting him on autorun and tabbing out to check something while the Harvest Reapers and wolfy prowlers swarmed him. Note to self: no more caves; no more auto-run; no more tabbing out…. At least, not until the next time! 🙂
