108 is really great ….

Made it out of Santa Cruz without too much trouble, after a nice visit with mom. I stopped off to grab a coffee at SCCRC and Jeremy asked where I’d been. I said, “Abducted by aliens again,” and he said it’s not the first time someone had told him that. (But, the last time he’d heard it was from a guy with no pants getting arrested in the coffee house. No shoes, no pants, no sanity: no service — go directly to jail. Ahh, Santa Cruz!)

And then, back into the mountains. Taking Sonora Pass back to 395 again, with a short camping break at Pinecrest.

Not sure when it happened, but the highways are repaved and smooth, and the general store is 100% remodeled. Kai and I were here during the fires a few years ago, and all one could see then was a wall of brown smoke. Much better view today!

Highly recommended to visit mid-week in the fall. It is cold at night, but sunny and warm during the day. And, best of all: no one else is here.*

*well, a handful, but I could count ’em on one hand … oh, wait … let me think about that.

There could be more than five in a handful.

Exactly! An old-timer at the general store said almost no one lives here year-round any more. So, it really is just a few stray campers and day-users. Very quiet, and that’s a good thing.

Ya ever stop and stay awhile in Placerville, CA? There’s some real nice hotels there. I always stay at the Gold Country Inn, for example.
